Shanghai: What We’ve Learned So Far

Today officially marks our first week in Shanghai.  Here are a few things we’ve learned about our new home so far…

– it’s pronounced “Shong-hai”

– the backs of our knees can sweat more than we ever thought humanly possible

– while Shanghai is one of the most “western” and cosmopolitan cities in China, most people DO NOT speak English

– tipping is not expected and actually makes employees uncomfortable… they will chase you down to give you your change back

– it’s perfectly acceptable to fall asleep anywhere and everywhere

– it is possible to purchase a sturdy plunger for approximately $0.75

– the weather can change dramatically within minutes… maybe even seconds!

– traffic signals are merely a suggestion

– need directions, to get a translator, or find something in Shanghai?  There are iphone apps for that… there are apps for everything!

– most mattresses are made out of plywood… no exaggeration there!

-wherever you go, pick up a business card, because it will have directions in Chinese characters that you can show your cab driver for future visits

– no matter how many times you hear the word “dong” used, it is still funny

I’m sure we’ll learn plenty more in the coming days and months!  To follow up with that “weather can change in a matter of moments” point, I just realized that in the last post I forgot to mention these two photos were taken exactly 5 minutes apart… I even double checked the time stamps!
