5 Weeks

Life would really be perfect if I could just find a way to become a professional baby and cat snuggler. Seriously though, these moments are precious beyond words…

The cats are still watching Isla warily, and trying to figure out just what she is exactly. With wide eyes, they cautiously sniff her toes and the top of her head, but that’s about the extent of their interactions thus far. The minute she makes a sound, they bolt. The other day Miller was sniffing Isla, and he seemed very interested in her, so we were thinking he was making great progress. That is, until he reached his paw out and whacked her upside her sweet little head. Naughty kitty. We’ll keep working to help the cats feel comfortable, so that our furry and non-furry babies can develop a happy friendship. I think Miller might be coming around… last night he gave Isla some kisses!

This week marked the beginning of Isla’s first baby babbles and coos. Needless to say, Mommy and Daddy melt every single time she tries to talk! We seriously can’t get enough. Isla especially loves to talk to Isaac, and has been giving him big smiles and sweet little “ah-goo’s” when he gets home from work each evening. Smiles are also making regular appearances throughout each day, both unexpectedly and in response to our talking. Surprisingly, some of Isla’s biggest smiles have come after we wipe her mouth with her burp rag- she loves it! Too funny!

Isla is growing so fast! I’ll admit that I am kind of in denial that our 5 week old baby girl is now fitting into some of her 3 month clothes. They’re a bit baggy, but our little string bean is so long that the newborn-sized jammies just aren’t cutting it anymore. Gah, before we know it our baby will be heading off to college! Sob!

Speaking of college, I bought this darling sleeper at the Ross in Corvallis back when I was at Oregon State! I distinctly remember finding it, loving it (as it was the ONLY baby outfit in aqua I had ever seen at that point), and hoping that I would someday give it to my daughter. Dressing Isla in it, and thinking back to when I pulled that little sleeper off the rack- now that was a pretty surreal moment!

Here she is conversing with the couch cushion… her second favorite buddy to chat with, behind Daddy.

Isla has been to several of Daddy’s basketball games, and I cannot believe how well she handles all the noise. The buzzers rattle the bleachers, but Isla doesn’t seem bothered at all. In fact, she’s slept through the last two games. The players’ parents have joked that they don’t think she is real, that she’s just a perfect little doll. It’s been such a treat to come and support Isaac as he coaches, and we’re so excited to be joining him in Beijing next weekend for a tournament!

I sometimes think I’d glue Isla to my chest and my lips to the top of her head if given the chance… but then I wouldn’t be able to see her beautiful face, so perhaps I should rethink that crazy idea…
